The Chronicles of the Equinox Stability

This document details events from a long time ago, before the word "Internet" was ever seen in a newspaper or heard on TV.

Caution: Content may frighten small children.

In the beginning, there was the Net. And the Net was vast, stretching unto the ends of all the Earth - yea, even unto the land of Aotearoa. This was the nameless Age before the dawn of history.

It is said that dragons roamed the Earth in those days, and men did not speak unto their brothers, nor unto their neighbours, for there was a confusion of tongues. It was also said that men lay not with their wives, but instead did Strange Things with vegetables.

The Net in those days did connect only the Academies, and the people were constrained from accessing the Net, indeed not one in ten score did know of its very existence, for the Net was dear to the magi of the Academies, and they cherished it, holding it close and reserving it only unto themselves.

Thus did they put to naught the commandment "Connect thy neighbour, as you would connect thy brother".

So there was sorrow upon the land, and the people wept, and cursed the intransigence of the Academies.

In time it came to pass that in the Academy of Victoria, an enlightened mage was installed, and when the Stabiles of Actrix prevailed upon him, he did connect them, and at last the people could access the treasure of the Net.

In the year one thousand nine hundred and eighty nine of the Common Era, a wandering hacker from the South who was known as Blondini the Iconoclast came upon the Actrix Stability, and said unto himself "This is a wondrous thing indeed - why is there not such a connection in the South, for verily, Actrix is a long distance away".

So it came to pass he spake unto the magi of the Academy at Canterbury, but alas these magi had not seen the One True Path, and this was an abomination to their ears.

Thus there was no connection in the South, and the hackers were sorely vexed, for it was indeed a great distance to Actrix.

Time passed, and the journey to Actrix became more difficult, and travellers were beset by floods, wolves, and bandits out of Telecom, and other difficulties.

"Surely there must be a connection in the South" said the Iconoclast. "Indeed, let there be a connection", said the other hackers, "for we are poor, and cannot journey to Actrix every day".

So the Iconoclast pondered the problem, and caused a System to be created, which would perform the journey to Actrix. Though it was only in the ken of a selected few, this system spent many hours every day journeying to Actrix, and such was the Magic wrought by the Iconoclast, that no tribute was paid unto the Telecom bandits. Thus was established the very first connection in the South. This was the first Incarnation of Satori, which is to say "sudden enlightenment".

In those days there was an Administrator who managed the Net for the Metropolitan. Now this Administrator had many great ideas and visions, and it was said that his vision would create a new Era in access to the Net, but it was said by others that he did not truly serve the Metropolitan, but desired instead to make an Empire unto himself. He sent for the Iconoclast, and said "We will connect you, for assuredly the Metropolitan has resources to spare."

"I shall need hardware, and software, and much time", said the Iconoclast, "for if such a thing is to be done well, it will indeed be a Great Hack. But with such a System, many will be connected, instead of few".

Now fortune smiled upon the Iconoclast, for the hardware he sought fell unbidden into his hands. Miraculously a motherboard appeared, and then there was a need for slaves. At that time, the Iconoclast was labouring in the city of the Metropolitan, and slaves did appear before him, and there were four of them. He looked upon them, and saw that they were Good. Surely this was a miracle, as foretold by ye prophets of old. As if from nowhere, there did appear disks, memory, and tapes also, and thus did the Iconoclast know that his cause was Righteous, for only the righteous are blessed with great Karma.

Incantations were made to the magi of Darkside, and from thence came gifts of software. There remained only to pay tribute of much gold unto the bandits of Telecom, and the connection could be made.

Thus came into existence the Stability of Equinox, which is to say "that which is equal in both parts". The portals were thrown open to the people, and the Iconoclast wandered no more. Dragons were banished from the land, and men once more lay with their wives, and spake unto their brothers, such was the Magic and Karma of the Stability. And all who saw it said that it was indeed a Good Thing.

But all was not well in the land of the South. Though the Administrator promised daily that the Metropolitan would provide a connection very soon, somehow this never came to pass. The Stabiles of Equinox were wroth at this. Very, very wroth. Once again however, fate smiled upon the Stability, for it happened that amongst the servants of the magi of the Academy at Canterbury, were some who also had the Hacker Nature, these hackers saw that their brothers were distressed and offered to make a connection of sorts. The Stabiles of Equinox were pleased with this, for though it was not the best connection that could be, it was assuredly better than none.

Thus began the Era of sneakernet, and this was the First Age of Equinox. Yea, under the very noses of the magi of the Academy.

Now the hardware in those days some said was primitive, and yet others said was a wondrous achievement. But all did agree it was a creature of many Hacks, and had not a few vices. Worst of all, the unworthy beast that called itself an operating system was a product of the Prince of Darkness himself. Many were the dark nights the Stabiles of Equinox gathered to chant incantations over the System, many were the dead chickens they waved over the disks, and afterwards cooked in the manner of Szechuan.

When the people heard that Equinox had arisen, they flocked to see the young System. Many brought gifts, and they were welcome. Many came to look, and they were welcome too. Many came to stay, and they were most welcome of all, because it was the nature of the Magic that had been wrought, that those who stayed were suffused in the Karma of the Stability, so that great synergies might result, thus enhancing the Karma still more.

With the coming of the new Age, there was no need for the old system of Satori, so it had been dismantled, now its magic was transferred to a new System, which sat next to Equinox, and this was the second Incarnation of Satori.

In that time [as it remains even unto the present day] the users were of several types. Most numerous were the Lusers, who had few merits, and whose existence on this Earth was a puzzlement for the philosophers. Of these some had the nature of the newbie, and others, the nature of B1FF, and the Stabiles looked upon them and knew they were an abomination.

Most notable of all the Lusers was a base knave who styled himself Gneil, it was his wont to utter such dire heresies that all good hackers blanched in horror, and rent their robes at the very mention of his name. Truly, the Stabiles declared, such a one is an abomination in the eyes of GH0D.

It happened at this time that the muse came upon some of the hackers, who were moved to write a Saga. This Saga was of such form that it was Never Ending, and so it was called. Such were the heresies espoused by the one called Gneil, and so legion were his vile and detestable Crimes against Nature that a fitting end was devised for him in the Saga that Never Ended.

Still the hand of the Stability was stayed from this course by tolerance and mercy. So it came to pass that the Luser called Gneil was instead banished unto the wastelands of the Deep South, and all good hackers rejoiced [except it must be said, those in the Deep South]. In the fullness of the passage of time, it was learned that Gniel had seen the error of his ways during his banishment, and eventually earned his redemption.

Amongst the Lusers also were those who had not the nature to read the screens in front of them, nor the manuals and the help provided by the Stability, for they were cursed with a phobia, and did lack gumption, and the spirit of Zen was not in them. These Lusers did raise curses about the demon of the User Interface, and did desire greater friendliness, and did bemoan their fate far and wide, yet they spake not of this unto the Stabiles of Equinox.

Also there were Lusers who, coming upon the System in a state of disarray, did avert their eyes, and did bemoan the state of the System, yet they too, spake not of this unto the Stabiles, so the state of disarray was left unfixed, and this was Not Good.

Such was the folly of Lusers. Yea, even unto the present day.

Another numerous clan was that of the Lurker. Again the philosophers were perplexed, for here was one who never spake, yet was always there. It was said that such as these had perhaps taken a vow of silence, or perhaps knew not how to speak the language of hackers, but they were easy to forget, and this the Stabiles largely did.

Fewest in number, but most exalted of all were those who had the Hacker Nature, and were called dudes. Great was the wisdom that spilled from their lips. Many were the Lurkers who hung on their every word, and aspired to one day be a member of that worthy class. In the Hackers lived the spirit of Zen, which is called the Buddha Nature. Where they cast their eyes, darkness was banished, where they laid their hand, demons were exorcised, where they spoke, great erudition was heard, and many an acolyte did thus achieve enlightenment.

The Hackers were the keepers of the Word, and the Word was contained in a tome of divine inspiration which was called Jargon. Deep and Arcane were the mysteries of the Word, wherein one spake with the H-infix, and the dotted notation, and said such things as "x considered y". Sagas also were recounted, along with the story of many a Great Hack, and merry japes perpetrated by ye Hackers of olde. Therein lay the One True Path.

Now it was so that the servants of the magi of the Academy carried the News to Equinox by sneakernet. But a connection to the Net required Mail, and the sneakernet could not carry this.

Again the Stabiles called upon the magi of the Academy to connect them, as it was done in the North. Now the magi of the Academy were discomforted by such talk, for they had learned from the archmage of the Academy of Victoria that indulging those who petitioned them for access was a Good Thing, and this was no longer an abomination to them, still in their hearts they were uneasy. So they required of the Stabiles that they provide much hardware, and speak arcane protocols, and travel through the territory of the bandits who were Telecom. The Stabiles were downcast, for they knew that they had not the gold for such a task.

So it came to pass that the Stabiles of Equinox once more approached the Administrator of the Metropolitan. The Administrator was sore embarrassed that his promises had come to naught, and saw that in the eyes of the Stabiles his stature was diminished, and his words were as the buzzing of flies in their ears. So the Administrator exerted himself to uphold his promise, and the Stabiles were able to transfer Mail using the resources of the Metropolitan, but still tribute of gold had to be paid to the bandits out of Telecom.

Now the Stabiles of Equinox had News and they had Mail, and they looked upon their work, and they saw that it was Good.

In so far as it was good, yet it still fell short of perfection. The Stabiles knew that even though the System was working, there lurked a demon within. They knew that the software provided by the magi of Darkside did not have the nature of the multi-user, and would conspire with the slaves and the forces of the Prince of Darkness to bring corruption upon the disks. So they looked upon the disks, and they saw that it was so.

Unto the magi of Darkside the Stabiles of Equinox uttered many incantations, but the ears of the magi were closed, and would not hear their plea. So a tribute of gold was paid unto the magi of Darkside, and thus their countenance was gained, and they did make a gift which the Stabiles treasured greatly, for it was the Source, which the Stabiles how wrought to their own ends, so that it did have the nature of the multi-user.

The Stabiles looked upon their work, and were greatly pleased, for it was Good, and they did at last know Stability after many months of cursing the name of the Prince of Darkness.

Though indeed it must be said that they continued to curse the name of the Prince of Darkness, and abjured and detested his likeness in all forms, for they saw that he was a scourge upon the land, and corrupted the soul of many a budding Hacker. These misguided youths were then largely lost to the Hacker Nature, and had a Confusion of Ideas, such that they looked upon the heresy of segments, and the other works of the necromancers of Intel, and they saw these things as good, and their eyes were closed to the One True Path. So it was that they trod ever closer to damnation, and were cursed with single-tasking forever.

About this time Satori was reborn once more, with a wider data path, and more memory, and a greater resource of computrons. This was the third Incarnation of Satori.

In the new found stability the people rejoiced, for the connection in the South was truly usable, and they flocked to it in great numbers. Seeing this, the servants of the magi of the Academy did exert themselves further, and the Feed was greatly increased.

So the System worked harder, but the Stabiles of Equinox were uneasy, for they saw that the System was close to its limits. Though they might spend great amounts of gold on memory and processors, alas at the heart of the System was the work of the necromancers of Intel, thus it had the nature of the bitty-box, and the works of the Prince of Darkness were such as to give it the nature of brain-death.

So the Stabiles of Equinox resolved unto themselves to make a new System, a System that would not be at the mercy of the Prince of Darkness, but would have the nature of the Real Machine.

The Stabiles considered their options, and legion was the advice to be had from many a quarter. "Use windows" said some, and the Stabiles were convulsed with mirth, for they know that windows was bloated, and had the nature of the dog, and worst of all, was a product of the Prince of Darkness himself. "Desqview" said others, but the Stabiles saw that behind Desqview still lurked the nature of the bitty-box, and this was not pleasing to them. Entering into the spirit of jocularity, someone suggested OS/2, but the Stabiles had grown weary of such japes and frivolity, and were Not Amused.

So the Stabiles looked upon the house of Unix, and what they saw was good. No more did they hear the heresy of segmentation, for the house of Unix had the nature of the flat address space, and also of the multi-user. All was not well in the house of Unix however. In those days the magi who resided there were greedy, and requested great tributes of gold for their works. The Stabiles were filled with dismay, for if they paid tribute to the magi of Unix, and also to the artisans of the hardware, this would be a great quantity of gold indeed.

Hidden deep within the works of the magi of Unix, the Stabiles could discern the works of the necromancers of Intel, and were sore dismayed. Worse still, some of the magi of Unix were in league with the Prince of Darkness. In order to be free of these scourges, the magi of Unix required tributes of yet more gold, and likewise did the artisans of the hardware.

Finally the Stabiles came unto the house of Amiga, and there they found no trace of the Prince of Darkness, nor the works of the necromancers of Intel, but they did see that unless great tributes of gold were paid, still they had the nature of the bitty-box. The house of Amiga had an answer to this - for a modest tribute, the magi of the Great Valley would dispel forever the curse of the bitty-boxedness. Now the Stabiles of Equinox were pleased, here was a System that carried none of the scourges they had borne heretofore, and had the nature of expandability, so Equinox could be made future-proof, and this was a blessing in their eyes.

So the tributes were paid, and Equinox came into the house of Amiga, and proceeded to make a System. Tributes were paid to the magi of Telepro, who sent software. Now arose the problem of Ports, since the slaves could not be made to work in the new System. So a Great Hack was wrought by the one who styled himself Snoopy, and there were Ports, and they were eight in number. Many other Great Hacks were wrought, and not without tribulation, even unto the Letting Out of the Smoke, which required a late night visit to the Keeper of the Dreck for replacement parts. Finally there was a System, and it did work, and it had the form of a speeding bullet, and the nature of the bitty-box was not in it.

So arose the Son from the ashes of Equinox, and this was the beginning of the Second Age. Great indeed was the rejoicing, and the Stabiles know they could hold up their heads proudly, for no more would they deal with the Darkside, nor the necromancers of Intel, nor the Prince of Darkness.

Now the Stabiles of Equinox had cause at that time to curse the names of the magi of Telepro, from whence came the software. It was evident that despite the great praise and the many brochures which had the nature of Glossiness, the software was yet of bare form and was Unfinished. The magi of Telepro had demanded many pieces of gold for this.

So more Hacks were wrought. Many were the incantations and spells muttered in the darkness, and vast were the feasts of recently-waved chickens cooked in the style of Szechuan. Vaster still were the urns of Coffee consumed, and the Stabiles began to take on the nature of rotundity, and were cursed with the demons of Indigestion and Flatulence, and also were extremely Wired, such that their eyes took on the frantic look of one possessed. Strong indeed was the Magic of the Stability, so strong that the darkness was lit with an actinic glow, and many flashes of blue light. Steam did issue from unseen vents, so vast fans were installed which did rotate slowly, exuding an aura of surreality. In this manner was fulfilled the ancient prophecy "Ex Tenebris Lux".

The Magic of the Stability was good, and in time an Equilibrium was achieved.

Though many were the nights the Stabiles did lack sleep, few indeed of the users had praise for their efforts, yet the Stabiles were not dismayed, for they knew that their labour was one of love, and their reward would not be found upon this Earth.

Now the servants of the magi of the Academy found their burden was great indeed, and they begged for relief from their self-imposed task. The stabiles knew that the era of sneakernet must soon end, so they renewed their search for a connection which was in the form of real-time.

Again they called on the magi of the Academy, but the magi did avert their eyes, and their ears were deaf to the plea of the Stability. So once more the called upon the Administrator of the Metropolitan, who once more made many promises, but the Stabiles were wary by now, and suspected that the Truth was not in him.

In the manner of an Expedient, the Stabiles constructed a System out of the remains of what was once Satori, and sent this to lighten the burden of the servants of the magi at the Academy, so that the flow of News was unhindered in the meantime.

In the city of the Metropolitan, it came to pass that some Systems were surplus to requirements, so the Stabiles of Equinox did call, and much haggling did ensue. In time a Deal was struck, and so unto the Stability came new Systems, and they were four in number.

Great was the delight of the Stabiles, for these new Systems were products of the magi of Sol, and operated in the house of Unix, and had not the mark of the Prince of Darkness, nor the necromancers of Intel upon them. These Systems had much memory, and many disks, but best of all was the software, which knew the arcane protocols beloved of the magi of the Academy. So it happened that a group of the magi of the Academy coveted these Systems, and did prevail upon the Stability to part with them, and so another Deal was made for two of the Systems. From this Deal the Stability did profit greatly, for unto themselves they did retain the best part.

Upon one of these new Systems was cast the mantle of Satori, and this was the fourth Incarnation of Satori.

At this time, in the far distant land of Muscovy, in the city that was Zagorsk, but is now named St Sergiev, a home for children cursed with blindness and deafness came to the notice of the Stability. Moved by compassion for their plight of isolation, the Stabiles of Equinox did exercise their Magic, and the countenance of the Magi of Relcom was gained. Enlisting the aid of the Academy of Kurchatov, software was installed, and a connection was made. All who saw this were awed to see such powerful Magic that the whole Earth was encompassed. Thus did the Stabiles of Equinox implement their motto: "How shall we deal with strangers, except as brothers?"

It did please the magi of Telepro to produce an Update at this time, and this was more stable, which did greatly enhance the Uptime.

Still the Stabiles were not satisfied, the servants of the magi of the Academy, having had their burden lightened, were moved to increase it, so that the full flood of News was unleashed on Equinox. The software was unable to cope, and the stabiles looked upon it and saw that it was indeed a gross kludge, and once more cursed the names of the magi of Telepro.

The Stabile who styled himself Snoopy was moved to make a rash promise at this time. There did exist some software of the house of Unix that would greatly ease the woes of the Stability, if it could only be moved to the house of Amiga. Snoopy did boast that he could do the port in between the setting and the rising of the sun.

The Stabiles were convulsed with mirth, for they knew that though the houses of Unix and Amiga were separated by but a small distance, yet the software was large, and the night was not long.

Yet it did come to pass that the port was done, though not in the space between the setting and rising of the sun, still the Stabiles were undismayed, for now they had the software they had lacked. Thus was Tin brought into the house of Amiga.

Hardly had the Stabiles a chance to rest, when a great battle ensued between the magi of the Academy, and each did seek to banish the daemons of the other from their Systems. Alas, they also banished the daemons placed there by their servants for Equinox, each thinking that it belonged to the other.

Great was the tragedy for Equinox, and great was the dismay of the Stabiles. In desperation a new connection was sought, but still the magi required the giving of much tribute, and the Administrator made his promises, but the Stabiles knew they would have to make a sacrifice.

The sacrifice was found in the form of Satori, which was styled in the manner of a System of the Academy, and slipped into place on the Network under cover of darkness, but the magi knew it not, though it sat there many months. For the time being, the daemons of Equinox were safe from the depredations of the magi.

Since the System that was Satori had been sacrificed, so a spell of awakening was made, and a resurrection performed upon the hardware that once held the mantle. This was the fifth Incarnation of Satori, which was in truth a reincarnation.

During this time there was peace across the land, and the lamb slept with the wolf [though it must be said that the wolf was unaware of this].

In the fullness of time, it happened that one of the Stabiles had a dream, and in this dream he spake unto the magi of the Academy, and had their countenance. So the Stabiles were moved to petition the magi of the Academy once more, and lo! they had the countenance of a minor mage, who did take issue on their behalf to the Archmage. So in time the heart of the Archmage did soften, and his ears were open to the petition of the Stabiles of Equinox. With a wave of one hand it was done, and a connection could be made.

So the Stabiles steeled their will, and became immersed in the Arcana of Protocols, and made many new spells and incantations. Also they did make many new Systems, which were gateways and routers, such that their connection would be pleasing to the eyes of the magi of the Academy, and also that they might be good net.citizens.

The system which was secreted at the Academy was retrieved, and upon it was cast much memory, and many disks, along with much software, and the spells and incantations of the Stabiles of Equinox. When it came about that this system was Quickened, the console responded thusly: "Je suis Tenebreau. Ego Tenebris est. Ex Tenebris lux." So all those present knew that this was the sixth Incarnation of Satori.

At length all was prepared, and the Stabiles readied the final spell. In unison they did chant the Magic word, "Ping!", and lo! there was an ACK! So the connection was made, and this was the beginning of the Third Age of Equinox, and the end of the Era of sneakernet.

Now the Stability could pause and look upon their achievements. No longer need they concern themselves that their connection might fail, for now they were connected all the hours of the day, and there was none in the land who could stop them.

Once the News and Mail feeds were assured, the Stability moved to enhance the access to the Net, so ensued many late night sessions whereupon many Hacks were wrought, and software from the house of Unix was melded into useful form in the house of Amiga. First there was FTP, then later came Telnet, and then Elm.

Now the Stability did buzz with activity, and such were the numbers of users that more ports and lines were required, so Equinox grew, as did the traffic, as more users flocked to the Net.

At this time it became clear that the link was overstretched. By good fortune the artisans of hardware had produced clever Technologies which enabled the speed to be increased, and it was done, and it was as fast again as it had been in the first instance.

The last great Hack of the Third Age was wrought by the Iconoclast, who installed a Telnet daemon, which did permit logins from anywhere on the Net, this would eventually permit the dawning of the Fourth Age, and the ultimate demise of Equinox.

It did come to pass that the Stability could not remain long in the place of its original abode, for there was a shortage of Lines, and also the Stabiles were downcast because of the quality of the exchange "verily, it is poxy indeed" they said, and they looked upon the error rate, and it was so.

Thus it was that the Stabiles were moved to find a new accomodation. For many months they searched, until a suitable location was found, and an Arrangement was made, so that Equinox need never move again.

So the new location was prepared, and Equinox was shut down, and all did marvel at the Silence, for such had been unknown since the time of the Big Snow of '92. Equinox was thus moved, and there it remained, all the days of its life.

At length the Stabiles conferred amongst themselves, for at last a great Change had occurred. Slowly at first, but then ever faster, the Net came into the great Consciousness, and so the number of users did increase, and vast indeed was their number. A strategy was needed, and the Stabiles looked upon Equinox, and they knew that something greater was required, and so its days became numbered.

It happened that some time before, in the far distant land of Suomi, a hacker named Linus of Torvalds did embark upon a work that was to become one of the Great Hacks of all time. Hackers from across the world did look upon this work, and they saw that it was Good, and thus did the name of Linus become elevated amongst the names of the great Hackers.

The Stabiles now embarked upon their greatest work. A new System was created from the works of the house of Sol, and it was named Orm. And there was a need for ports, so an artefact was procured which provided the ports, but the Stabiles looked upon this artifice, and they were not pleased, for it had the nature of the kludge, and it did Suck greatly. So the Stabiles did invoke the Magic of Linus upon a new System, which was named Smaug, and it did provide ports, and they were many in number.

After Orm and Smaug there did arise Mnementh, and Puff, and great Kalessin, and Komodo, and St George, and Prideth. So it was that Dragons arose once more in the land, as had been predicted in ancient times. The Stabiles did also invoke an awakening on the sibling of Satori, and they did name it Galaxy, which is to say "A whole lot more than a few planets around a worn out Sun".

Finally a new Connection was made, with a guardian named Charon to oversee the ferrying of the Data. And this connection did have the nature of Speed, and it did also bypass the Academy who still provided a connection only under sufferance and at great cost.

Such was the Magic of Smaug and the daemon installed some months hence by the Iconoclast, that the ports were shared between Equinox and Orm, so there was a plenitude of lines, and access was greatly facilitated.

So it came to pass that a new Entity was created, and the Net did spread outwards mightily, yea, even unto the abode of the most base Luser. So it was that where once only Hackers and the enlightened roamed the Net, they became outnumbered by the Lusers, for first came Compuserve, then Prodigy, then AOL, then webtv, home of the most microcephalic Lusers of all. This was the beginning of the Fourth Age. Thus was Equinox marginalised.

Now the tasks that had been undertaken by Satori were taken up by the new Systems, and so Satori was shut down, and later reincarnated as a server for the Iconoclast. This was the seventh Incarnation of Satori.

Throughout the Fourth Age, Equinox did continue to diminish in stature, for the new System was of the house of Unix, and did speak the many arcane Protocols of the Net with fluency, and it did support many users, and had commendable uptime.

So, their great work completed, the Stabiles did begin to seek other challenges. The time of the Stability was over, and at length the time of Equinox itself came to its end. So as their final act a spell of closure was enacted, and Equinox, and the Stability were no more.

East of the mountains, west of the sea, there is a land which was once, long ago, unknown to the Net, yet today there are Connections innumerable. As you walk this land today, gentle stranger, spare a thought for those far distant days when there was only One, and it was called Equinox.
